Lower Lodge Farm Colne Nature Reserve

The wetlands around Lower Lodge Farm don't look like much from the lane - just flat Essex countryside with reeds and the occasional flash of water. But spend an hour here and you'll spot why birdwatchers make the pilgrimage east of Colchester. The reserve is proper habitat for warblers, bitterns if you're lucky, and the sort of dragonflies that make you remember why you bothered with binoculars.

It's a walking reserve, more than anything. You won't find a visitor centre or a gift shop. What you get are paths threading through reedbeds and grazing marshes, the kind of place where the only sound is wind in the grass and the occasional splash. Bring wellies even in summer - the ground squelches. Best visited spring through early autumn when migrants are moving through and nesting birds are active. Winter's quieter but harsher on the spirits.

Families with young children might find an hour enough before the novelty of "spotting something" fades. Serious birdwatchers and nature photographers will happily lose a morning here. The nearest decent facilities are back in Colchester, so pack a flask.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Colchester Country Park or Ardleigh are closest at around 4 miles - this makes a proper day-trip escape without driving far. Coopers Beach Holiday Park over towards Colchester coast is only five miles away too. It's the sort of place that reminds you why Essex gets overlooked; there's real wildness here if you know where to look.
