Wizard's Chasm

The entrance to Wizard's Chasm is easy to miss if you're not paying attention - just a modest opening in the limestone face near Skipton, with nothing particularly dramatic announcing itself. Once inside, though, the cave opens up properly, with passages that tunnel deep into the hillside and enough space to wander without crouching the whole way through. The formations are decent - stalactites, flowstone, that sort of thing - though this isn't Agen Allwah in terms of scale.

It's free to visit, which helps justify the slightly anticlimactic walk in. Allow an hour if you're taking your time and poking about, less if you're just passing through. Kids with a bit of cave experience will find it engaging; very young ones or those who get spooked by tight spaces might struggle with some sections. The real appeal is how accessible it is - no booking required, no waiting about - so it works brilliantly as a quick diversion while staying at one of the nearby parks like Ribblesdale Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite.

Go on a dry day. Water can make the floor properly treacherous, and that's when the novelty wears off fast. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, and you'll get better light if you bring a torch. It's worth combining with other attractions in the Ribblesdale area rather than banking your entire afternoon on it alone, but as a free exploration for an hour, you could do far worse in North Yorkshire.
