Wolford Chapel

The chapel sits tucked away down a narrow lane outside Honiton, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Built in the 13th century, Wolford Chapel is one of those genuinely quiet spots where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no queues, just stone walls and the weight of 800 years pressing down nicely.

It's small. Properly small. The kind of place you walk around in about ten minutes, read the plaques, wonder about the people who built it, and move on. The interior has that particular smell of old churches - cold stone, dust, and time. There's real atmosphere here, though, especially if you time it right and have the place to yourself.

History buffs will get more from this than most, but it's also worth the minor detour if you're walking the lanes around Honiton anyway. Don't expect elaborate decoration or interactive displays. This is medieval, stripped down, and honest. Kids will probably get bored after five minutes unless they're the type who actually find old buildings interesting.

If you're staying at Hartridge Springs Spa Glamping nearby, it's a decent half-hour walk or quick drive. Check ahead though - opening hours aren't always reliable for a chapel of this size. You might find the door locked, which is frustrating but also somehow very English. The real value here is in the walk through Devon lanes to find it, not the chapel itself.
