Wolfstones

The walk up to Wolfstones is proper steep, which is fair warning if you're staying at one of the caravan parks scattered around Holmfirth. The payoff, though, is a commanding view across the South Yorkshire moorlands - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people bothered walking up there in the first place.

It's a modest peak by any measure, but the rocks themselves are worth the trip. Dark gritstone outcrops jut from the heather and rough grass, and they're the kind of feature that's been catching walkers' attention for centuries. The scramble around the stones takes maybe twenty minutes if you're pottering about with a camera. On a clear day you can see proper distances across the Pennine foothills.

This is walker's terrain rather than a casual family stroll. The approach from Holmfirth isn't waymarked everywhere, so you'll need a map or a decent GPS app. Allow a good two hours return if you're starting from the town itself, a bit less if you're based at Secret Valley Escapes or Holme Valley Camping, both within striking distance.

Wolfstones works best as part of a broader moorland ramble rather than a standalone destination. Pair it with other peaks and ridges in the area for a proper day out. The exposed position means weather can turn quickly - go when there's decent visibility, and avoid winter mornings when frost makes the stones properly slippery. It's free, obviously, and best tackled midweek if you want to avoid the weekend crowd.
