Wolla Bank Pit Nature Reserve

The wetland at Wolla Bank Pit, just inland from Skegness, is one of those places that reveals itself slowly. What you're looking at is a flooded gravel extraction site that's been reclaimed by nature - shallow pools fringed with reeds, scrubby woodland, and the kind of murky water that attracts serious birdwatchers. Bring binoculars. In winter, you'll spot overwintering wildfowl; spring and autumn bring migrating warblers and the occasional rarity that gets twitchers genuinely excited.

This isn't a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and boardwalks. It's raw, a bit boggy underfoot, and sometimes muddy as hell depending on recent rainfall. Perfect if you're the kind of person who actually enjoys getting your boots dirty. Families with young children might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on birds - there's no play area, no facilities that I could see, and the actual viewing opportunities are limited. You're working with whatever vantage points the footpaths offer.

If you're based at Creekside Family Camping in Anderby, less than a mile away, this makes a genuinely worthwhile morning outing. Combine it with a walk towards the coast and you've got a proper nature-focused day. Summer's quieter for birds, so aim for autumn migration or winter if you want any real action. Allow a couple of hours maximum - it's a small site.
