The Moat - Watermeadows

Walking along the edge of this quiet lake west of Skegness, you'll find yourself wondering why more people don't know about this spot. The Moat - Watermeadows is exactly what its name suggests: a proper English lake surrounded by traditional meadowland that floods seasonally.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here. I spotted herons standing motionless in the shallows and various duck species paddling about during my visit. The water level changes dramatically with the seasons, creating different habitats that attract wildlife year-round.

Families staying at nearby parks like Butlins Skegness or Haven Skegness Holiday Park will find this makes a lovely contrast to the seaside bustle. It's the sort of place where kids can run around safely while parents actually relax for once. Dog walkers particularly love the circular route around the water.

Allow about an hour for a gentle stroll, though you could easily spend longer if you're into photography or just fancy sitting by the water with a thermos. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are wise.

This isn't spectacular in the Lake District sense, but as a peaceful break from Skegness's candy floss and arcades, it's well worth the short drive inland. Sometimes the best discoveries are the quiet ones.
