Wonderhill Plantation

Wonderhill Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Hassocks, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's mixed forest - mostly deciduous with some conifers thrown in - and the paths are well-maintained if a bit muddy after rain. You're looking at a couple of hours wandering through here if you take it slowly, though the whole thing's manageable in an hour flat if you've got places to be.

The appeal is straightforward: it's quiet, genuinely peaceful, and offers decent tree cover without feeling like you're miles from civilisation. Families with younger kids will find it manageable enough, though there's nothing theatrical about it - no play equipment, no visitor centre, just trees and paths. Older children and serious walkers get more from it because there's space to actually stretch your legs without the crowds you'd find at some of the better-known spots locally.

If you're based at Downsview Park nearby, it's a no-brainer addition to your itinerary rather than a destination in itself. The woodland gives you something different from manicured parkland without requiring much planning. Free access and no set hours means you can slip in early morning or late afternoon when it's genuinely atmospheric.

Not a showstopper, but a solid pair of lungs for the area. Worth a visit if you're after a break from the main attractions, especially if you've got restless legs that need a proper forest walk.
