Woodcombe Sand

Getting down to Woodcombe Sand feels properly remote for Devon. You're tucked away on the southern edge of the Start Peninsula, a fifteen-minute drive from Kingsbridge, and the beach itself is only accessible on foot across private land - which means it stays wonderfully quiet even in summer. The sand is fine and golden, backed by low cliffs and accessible only at low tide, so timing matters. Bring a tide table or check beforehand, because get it wrong and you're marooned on rocks.

The beach itself is small but genuine. No arcades, no ice-cream vans, no crowds. Just sand, rock pools, and that particular kind of peace you get when you've had to walk for it. It's the sort of place where kids will hunt for crabs for hours, or where you'll just sit and read without guilt. Walkers appreciate it as a stopover on longer coastal routes, and it connects nicely to other Start Peninsula walks if you're after more miles.

If you're staying at Wilton Farm or Start Bay - both excellent bases just a couple of miles away - Woodcombe fits perfectly into a loose day's exploring. Give yourself two to three hours, depending on tide and energy. Go early in the morning or late afternoon if you want space. Winter is actually lovely, when the light is lower and the place feels even more like your own discovery. It's not for everyone - there's no facilities, no shelter, and you do have to earn it - but that's rather the point.
