Woodfield

Woodfield sits just outside Burntisland, a modest historic site that repays a brief detour if you're already exploring Fife's coastline. The ruins themselves are fairly sparse - what remains are fragments of what was once a substantial dwelling, with enough stone work to give you a sense of the building's former layout. It's the sort of place where ten minutes of poking about tells you most of what there is to know.

The real appeal here is the setting rather than the structures themselves. You get genuine quiet - the kind that's increasingly rare near populated areas - and the surrounding landscape gives good context for how settlements were positioned along this stretch of coast. History enthusiasts will find the bones of the place interesting; families with young children might find it underwhelming on its own, though it makes sense as part of a longer walk.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Pettycur Bay, Sandhills, or Kinghorn Harbour are all within a mile - Woodfield works well as a rainy-day leg-stretch rather than a main attraction. The walk there is pleasant enough, taking you through genuine countryside rather than built-up areas. Allow twenty minutes or so, not counting sitting time.

Timing doesn't really matter; there are no gates, no crowds, no opening hours to worry about. Go when you fancy. The place feels forgotten in the best possible way, though that also means you shouldn't expect any facilities or interpretation boards. Bring a good map or your phone's GPS.
