Woodhouse Hill

Views across Morecambe Bay and beyond to the Lake District fells make the modest climb up Woodhouse Hill rather rewarding. At just 194 metres, this limestone outcrop north of Milnthorpe won't challenge serious walkers, but the panoramic vistas from the summit trig point are well worth the effort.

Families will find this an ideal first proper fell for children - steep enough to feel like an achievement without being daunting. The path from Woodhouse village winds through pleasant farmland before the final push to the top. Allow an hour and a half for the round trip, including time to admire the view.

On clear days, you can pick out Blackpool Tower to the south and the Pennines to the east. The Lakeland fells spread out to the north, with Helvellyn and the Langdale Pikes visible on the horizon. It's a cracking spot for a picnic if the weather's playing ball.

Walking groups and photographers get the most from Woodhouse Hill, though anyone staying at nearby holiday parks like Fell End or Once Upon a Fell will find it a lovely morning's jaunt. Best tackled in decent weather when the views justify the climb - on grey days you're better off exploring Sizergh Castle or taking the kids to Leighton Moss instead.
