Wrang Plantation

The walk into Wrang Plantation takes you properly off the beaten track, just a few miles south of Chesterfield. It's a genuine working woodland - not some manicured nature reserve - where the trees do their job and visitors are a welcome bonus rather than the main event.

You're looking at mixed deciduous and conifer forest with decent trails threading through. The canopy's thick enough that even on a drizzly day it feels sheltered, and there's something satisfying about walking among proper woodland rather than the managed parks you find closer to town. The ground's soft underfoot, paths are generally clear, and it's the sort of place where you might actually spot something - rabbits, deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

Walking types will get real value here. It's not a destination in itself, but rather the kind of place you'd factor into a longer ramble, maybe combining it with Poolsbrook Country Park just down the road if you're staying at their caravan site. The trails vary - you can do a quick potter for half an hour or settle in for a couple of hours if you're keen. No facilities to speak of, so bring water and don't expect a café.

Timing-wise, early morning is best. You'll have the woods mostly to yourself, and that's when wildlife's most active. Kids who actually enjoy walking will find it interesting enough, though younger ones might get restless without a specific destination. Free access, as far as I can tell - just turn up and get on with it.
