Wroxton Duck Pond

The water's calm here, reflecting whatever sky's above it - that's the first thing that strikes you about Wroxton Duck Pond. It's a proper little nature reserve just outside Banbury, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare enough these days.

You're looking at a working pond that's become a haven for waterfowl and wetland wildlife. Ducks, obviously, but also geese, the odd heron if you're lucky and patient. The margins are thick with reeds and native plants, which means the bird life tends to be decent year-round. Spring and early autumn are best if you want to catch migrating species.

It's ideal for a short detour rather than an all-day job. Twenty minutes to an hour, depending on whether you're just pointing and smiling or actually taking binoculars and a notebook. Families with young kids find it engages them - there's water, there's wildlife, there's movement. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will get proper value. If you're expecting dramatic scenery or rare birds, adjust your expectations downward.

Access appears to be free, and there's usually enough space to park nearby without hassle. It works well as a leg-stretcher between Banbury and the various campsites scattered round the area - Fir Tree Campsite and Crofts Barn are both within a few miles if you're based that way.

Not a headline attraction, but it does what it says on the tin. Worth the fifteen-minute diversion if you're passing through.
