Wyeside

The Wye runs through Rhayader like a ribbon of proper wildness, and Wyeside is where locals and visitors actually spend time by it - not just passing through on the A470. It's a straightforward riverside spot with access to the water, benches, and the sort of green space that matters more when you're camped nearby than it might sound.

What you get is a genuine bit of river to explore. The water moves fast through here, banks are steep in places, and there's a real sense of the landscape doing something rather than just existing for the postcard. Walking the riverside is the main draw - you can head upstream towards the Elan Valley dams if you fancy it, or simply sit and watch the current work. It's free to access and there's no admission faffing about.

This works well for campers based at Wyeside Caravan & Camping Park itself, which sits right here - ideal if you want the kids to burn off energy without loading the car. Families with older children who actually enjoy a riverside walk will get more from it than those hoping for a playground. Walkers on the longer Elan Valley circuit will pass through and appreciate the water access. On a decent day it's lovely; on a grey Welsh afternoon it's more functional than atmospheric.

Allow an hour if you're walking the immediate area, or just twenty minutes if you're stopping to stretch legs from the campsite. The nearby Elan Oaks and The Pines parks are within easy driving distance if you want to base yourself slightly outside Rhayader proper but stay connected to the valley.
