Wylam Railway Museum

The old railway sheds at Wylam hold something genuinely special if you care about how Britain's industrial past actually worked. This isn't a glossy heritage centre with gift shop queues - it's a proper working museum where volunteers restore and display locomotives that once hauled coal from the pits. You'll see engines in various states of repair, some still functional, alongside the kind of detail work that shows just how complex these machines were.

Walking around the site gives you a real sense of what Wylam was - a village that existed because of the railways, built on coal and steam. The volunteers know their stuff and will talk your ear off if you let them, which is exactly what you want from a place like this. It's free entry, which feels right for something this local and labour-of-love. Allow a couple of hours to properly nose around, longer if you catch someone who'll explain the restoration projects. The site can be muddy after rain - proper footwear essential.

Stocksfield's your nearest town, handy for a cup of tea afterwards. Valley View Camping nearby offers a solid base if you're spending a few days exploring Northumberland's industrial heritage. Worth the detour if railways interest you, but don't expect Severn Valley polish.
