Wyver Wood

The woodland around Belper feels properly ancient, and Wyver Wood is the real deal if you're after something more substantial than a quick stroll. It's a genuine forest walk rather than a manicured park trail - think proper trees, decent shade, and paths that actually feel like they're taking you somewhere.

You're looking at a good hour or two here depending on which routes you pick. The wood's got enough ground to explore without being so vast you'll wander in circles for half a day. It works brilliantly if you're based at either Poplars Farm or Carsington Fields - both within easy striking distance - and you want to get the kids away from the caravan for a proper adventure. Older children and serious walkers will find it absorbing; younger ones might start complaining after forty minutes, so come armed with snacks and something to spot along the way.

The real appeal is the escape factor. You're far enough from Belper that it feels removed from things, yet close enough you're not burning hours on the drive. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the forest - birdsong, light filtering through branches, the smell of earth after rain. No visitor centre nonsense, no café upselling overpriced flapjacks. Just woodland doing what woodland does.

Bring waterproofs. These paths can be boggy in winter and after wet weather, which is half the charm really.
