Yankee Pier

The walk out to Yankee Pier rewards you with one of the Moray Firth's best vantage points - a proper industrial pier that juts into the water near Invergordon, giving you sweeping views across the firth towards the Black Isle and beyond. It's not exactly Instagram-friendly; this is a working harbour area, all corrugated iron and weathered concrete, which somehow makes it feel more honest than the polished viewpoints you get elsewhere.

You'll see container ships, fishing boats, and on a clear day the hills rise up convincingly enough to justify the short drive from the town centre. The walk itself is straightforward and flat - maybe fifteen minutes out and back depending on where you fancy stopping. Bring proper shoes; the pier surface is functional rather than pampered.

This appeals most to boat enthusiasts and landscape photographers who actually want something with character rather than a manicured layby. Families won't get much more than half an hour out of it unless the kids are genuinely interested in ships. It's the sort of spot you'd combine with a proper walk in the area - the Highlands offer far better hiking if you want to stretch your legs properly.

Combining it with a stay at somewhere like Newmore Highland Pods or Blackrock Caravan Park makes sense if you're basing yourself in Invergordon for a few days. The pier is free to access and you can visit anytime, though early morning light works best if you're after photographs.
