Yanworth Wood

The Cotswolds can feel a bit manicured at times - all honey-coloured stone and tea rooms - so stumbling into Yanworth Wood near Cheltenham is like finding the proper wilds tucked behind the gift shops. It's a genuine forest, not some managed nature trail with interpretive signs every fifty paces. Ancient woodland, the sort where you actually feel the landscape doing its own thing.

What you get here is straightforward: miles of walking through mixed woodland, plenty of shade, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the house. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but they're not manicured either. Expect mud after rain - this is a real working wood, not a country park. Spring is particularly good when the bluebells come through. Autumn's fine too if you can handle the damp.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy woods rather than views. If your family needs a viewpoint or an ice cream kiosk every twenty minutes, look elsewhere. But if you want proper forest air and the chance to spot whatever wildlife's about - woodpeckers, deer if you're lucky - it delivers. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're in no rush.

It's only a handful of miles from Cheltenham, making it an easy morning or afternoon break from the town itself. Pair it with Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, and you've got a solid base for exploring both the manicured Cotswolds and the bits that haven't been polished to death.
