Yarrow Valley Park

The valley floors here are proper boggy - you'll want decent boots if you're planning to explore properly. Yarrow Valley Park is a nature reserve sitting just outside Leyland, a working landscape of wetlands, woodland and grassland that feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to suburbia. You get around three miles of walking trails threading through it, with the River Yarrow running the length of the valley, and if you time it right you'll spot lapwings, curlews and the occasional kingfisher darting between the reeds. It's the sort of place where you'll actually see what Lancashire's natural landscape looked like before everything got drained and built on. The reserve isn't flashy. There are no visitor centres or cafes, just proper walking with the occasional boardwalk keeping your feet from the worst of the mud. That's rather the point. Families with older kids who actually want to walk will find plenty here - the terrain's manageable enough but you'll need patience and interest in what's underfoot rather than big dramatic views. Birdwatchers absolutely should make the trip; spring and autumn migrations are when it's worth the detour.
