Yateley Green

The Green itself is really just a sprawling open space where the forest breaks to moorland, a proper breathing room in the Bagshot Sands landscape. It's the kind of place where you can actually see sky, which sounds obvious but feels rare when you're surrounded by Scots pine and heather. The walking here is genuinely decent - you can loop around for an hour or potter about for twenty minutes depending on mood.

Yateley is best for people who actually enjoy walking rather than ticking boxes. If your idea of a day out is a circular route with a bench halfway round, you'll get proper value here. The ground's sandy in places, boggy in others, and it changes season to season enough to warrant multiple visits. Families with kids who'll run ahead on the paths do well here; it's open enough that you can see them, enclosed enough that they can't wander into the road.

There's no admission charge, no facilities to speak of, and no reason to ring ahead. Just turn up. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday when the car park fills. The light through the trees is best in autumn, though spring brings the whole place alive with bird activity.

Wellington Country Park sits five miles south, offering something more structured if you need a backup plan or a day with facilities. But Yateley Green on its own is the real deal - it's what local woodland looks like when nobody's trying to turn it into an experience.
