Yelloly Woods

Ancient oaks tower overhead while brambles catch at your sleeves - this is proper woodland walking just outside Clacton-on-Sea. Yelloly Woods feels refreshingly wild compared to the manicured seafront, with muddy paths that wind between centuries-old trees and the occasional glimpse of deer if you're quiet enough.

Families staying at nearby Valley Farm or Highfield Grange will find it a decent escape when the kids need burning off, though little ones might struggle with the uneven terrain. Dog walkers absolutely love it here - there's plenty of space for hounds to explore safely away from traffic.

The woods aren't massive, so an hour's ramble will see you cover most of the main tracks. Spring brings proper bluebells carpeting the forest floor, while autumn turns the canopy into a riot of golds and russets. Wellies are essential after rain - the clay paths turn into a proper quagmire.

It's free to wander, naturally, though there's nowhere formal to park so you'll need to find a spot on the surrounding lanes. Not exactly a destination in itself, but if you're based at one of the holiday parks dotted around this part of Essex, it offers a lovely contrast to beach days and amusement arcades.
