Yelverton Rock

A granite outcrop rising abruptly from the moorland just outside Tavistock, Yelverton Rock commands proper views across Dartmoor. It's the sort of spot locals know and visitors miss, which is half its appeal. The walk up takes maybe ten minutes from the car park, and the effort is worth it - on a clear day you're looking out over miles of open moorland with Tavistock tucked below. There's not much to 'do' here in the traditional sense. You climb it, stand on top, take photographs if the light's decent, then head back down. Kids will get a kick out of scrambling up the rocks, though it's bit steep in places and needs sensible footwear. It's free and accessible year-round, though winter mist can render the views useless. Allow an hour if you're not rushing.
