Yewtree wood

Walking into Yewtree Wood feels like stepping backwards in time. Ancient yews dominate the canopy - some of them gnarled and thick enough that you wonder if they've been standing since medieval times. It's proper woodland, the kind where the light filters green through the leaves and the ground squelches underfoot after rain.

The woodland itself is relatively compact, making it ideal for families with younger legs or anyone after a gentle hour's ramble rather than an all-day trek. Paths wind through the trees without being overly marked or manicured, which gives it an authentic feel. History buffs will appreciate the age of the trees, though there's little in the way of interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at.

Yewtree sits on Belper's doorstep, handily positioned if you're basing yourself at either Poplars Farm or Carsington Fields - both excellent caravan and camping spots within five miles. It's the kind of place you'd combine with a day exploring Belper itself, perhaps pairing it with walks along the Derwent Valley if you're after something more substantial.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. It's free to access - no gates, no charges - and genuinely worth an hour of your time if you're in the area. Nothing flashy, just good honest woodland that deserves more attention than it probably gets.
