York Castle Museum

The castle itself is long gone, but what fills this space now is arguably better - a proper museum that actually makes history feel real rather than dusty. York Castle Museum occupies the old prison building on the edge of the city centre, which sounds grim but isn't at all. Inside, you'll find recreated streets from different periods, period rooms, and thousands of objects that genuinely tell the story of how ordinary people lived. The Victorian street is the standout - gas lamps, shop fronts, the lot.

It's excellent for families with kids old enough to appreciate more than just "look, old stuff" - so roughly eight upwards, though the hands-on elements work for younger ones too. History enthusiasts will spend hours here. The execution chamber and dungeons add a dark edge that teenagers find properly gripping. You'll need at least two hours, three if you're thorough.

Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable value for what's on offer. The museum sits just south of York's medieval walls, making it an easy stop between exploring the Minster and wandering the shops. If you're based at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park - both just a few miles outside York - the museum works perfectly as a rainy-day backup or a proper half-day activity when the weather turns. Don't expect sweeping views from castle ramparts, but do expect to leave knowing considerably more about northern England than when you went in.
