Ywen Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees stretch for miles across this working woodland west of Hereford, creating one of the county's most peaceful forest walks. Ywen Wood feels properly wild - the kind of place where you can wander for hours without hearing traffic, just the crunch of leaves underfoot and birdsong overhead.

Families with older children will love the freedom here. There are no marked trails as such, but the terrain is gentle enough for confident walkers to explore at will. Bring a map though - it's easy to lose your bearings among the similar-looking glades.

Dog walkers particularly rate this spot. The woods connect to wider countryside paths, so energetic breeds can really stretch their legs. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn offers spectacular colour - easily rivalling the Cotswolds but without the crowds.

Access appears to be free, though finding the entrance takes a bit of local knowledge. Most visitors park carefully along nearby lanes and walk in. Allow at least two hours if you want to see the best bits.

Staying at Poston Mill or The Fold puts you within easy reach for morning woodland walks. After tramping through the trees, Hereford's cafes and pubs make for a proper reward.
