Three things hit you about Bognor first: the wind, the pier, and the slightly faded grandeur of a resort that's seen better days. This West Sussex seaside town wears its working-class holiday heritage on its sleeve, and honestly, it's all the better for it.

Butlins Bognor Regis still dominates the seafront with its retro holiday camp charm - love it or hate it, it's been bringing families here for decades. Away from the main drag, Hotham Park offers proper green space with mature trees and peaceful walks, while the town's literary connections run deeper than you'd expect. Blake's Cottage marks where William Blake lived his final years, and the blue plaque on his former home reminds you that this unassuming spot was once home to one of Britain's greatest poets.

The beach stretches for miles in both directions - shingle mostly, but clean and backed by decent promenades. Bognor Regis Golf Club sits just inland if you fancy a round, and Studio 36 keeps the local arts scene ticking over nicely.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Direct trains from London Victoria take about two hours, while the A29 connects you straight to the M25. Chichester's only eight miles north if you need a bigger town for shopping or dining.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for fish and chips or a pint, but far enough out to escape the summer crowds. South Downs Caravan Park gets consistently good reviews and puts you within striking distance of both the coast and the beautiful downland countryside that rises just inland.
