Three minutes from the M74 and you're in proper Border country, where the Solway Firth meets rolling Cumberland farmland. Carlisle sits at the northern edge of England, close enough to Scotland that you'll hear Glaswegian accents in the shopping centres. Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre offers proper close encounters with raptors, whilst the surrounding woodland - Brownelson Wood, Dalston Hall Wood, and Studholmes Plantation - provides excellent walking territory. These aren't manicured country parks but genuine working forests where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky.

Dalston makes a good base for exploring, with its own railway station connecting you to the wider network. The area feels genuinely rural once you're away from the main roads, with dry stone walls dividing sheep pastures and views across to the Lake District fells on clear days.
