Racing royalty meets Regency elegance in this spa town that's managed to keep its posh reputation without becoming stuffy. The Promenade still draws crowds for its designer shops and tree-lined boulevards, but venture beyond the main drag and you'll find proper local pubs tucked between the grand terraces.

The town sits perfectly positioned between the Cotswolds and the Severn Vale, making it a cracking base for exploring both. Churchdown Hill offers spectacular views across the county - it's a bit of a climb but well worth it on a clear day. Down in the valley, The Aquatic Habitat provides a fascinating glimpse into freshwater ecosystems, while history buffs should definitely visit the Hucclecote Roman villa to see how the other half lived 2,000 years ago.

Chosen Hill is another excellent vantage point, less crowded than its neighbour and perfect for watching the sun set over the Malvern Hills in the distance. The Jet Age Museum tells the story of aviation development with proper enthusiasm - not your typical dusty collection.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Direct trains from London Paddington take just over two hours, while the M5 puts most of the Midlands within easy reach. The town centre is compact enough to explore on foot, though you'll need wheels to reach the outlying attractions.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for dinner or a show, but far enough out to enjoy the rolling countryside that makes this corner of Gloucestershire so special. Several sites offer easy access to both the town's cultural offerings and the walking trails that snake through the surrounding hills.
