Garndolbenmaen

Scattered Roman stones and ancient earthworks dot the hillsides here, testament to two millennia of human presence in this corner of Snowdonia's foothills. Garndolbenmaen sits quietly among rolling green peaks, where sheep graze between Bronze Age settlements and Victorian slate spoil heaps.

The walking is exceptional. Y Foel offers proper mountain views without the Snowdon crowds, while Pen Llystyn Roman Fort rewards the scramble with glimpses into Wales' distant past. Craig Isallt and Moel Isallt make for a decent afternoon's yomp, though the paths can be boggy after rain.

Archaeology buffs will find plenty to pore over. Castell Caerau crowns one hilltop, its medieval stones crumbling picturesquely, while Dolbenmaen Motte speaks to Norman ambitions in this Welsh heartland. The Derwin Bach Roman Marching Camp requires a bit more imagination to appreciate, but the setting is lovely.

Porthmadog lies eight miles southwest for proper shops and the Ffestiniog Railway. The drive takes you through classic Gwynedd countryside - stone walls, scattered farms, the occasional red kite overhead. Black Rock Sands makes for a fine coastal excursion when the mountains feel too close.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense if you're after peace and proper walking. The likes of Ty'n Llan Camping or Beddgelert Campsite put you right in the thick of Snowdonia's quieter corners, where you can tackle peaks like Mynydd Cennin without fighting for parking spaces. It's Wales as it should be - unhurried, unspoilt, and absolutely lovely when the sun breaks through.
