Kidlington

Five miles north of Oxford's dreaming spires, this sprawling village sits quietly between the Thames and Cherwell valleys. Kidlington might not win beauty contests - it's properly suburban rather than chocolate-box pretty - but it makes a cracking base for exploring some of Oxfordshire's finest countryside and attractions.

The real draw here is what lies beyond the housing estates. Rousham House and Gardens, just a short drive away, offers some of the county's most atmospheric landscaped grounds. William Kent's 18th-century design remains largely unchanged, and the views across the Cherwell valley are absolutely lovely on a clear day.

History buffs will find plenty to occupy them. The Anglo-Saxon Burial Ground provides a fascinating glimpse into early English settlement, while The Eyecatcher - that curious folly on the horizon - makes for a decent walk with rewarding views. Closer to town, the Oxfordshire Museum in nearby Woodstock houses proper treasures, from Roman finds to Victorian curiosities.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The M40 runs close by, and Heyford train station offers direct links to Oxford and London. Most visitors use Oxford as their jumping-off point, though that rather misses the point - staying at one of the local parks means you're perfectly positioned for exploring the Cotswold fringes without the city crowds.

Woodstock lies just to the northwest, bringing Blenheim Palace within easy reach. The swimming pool there offers a decent alternative to Gosford Pool if you fancy a change of scene. It's not the most exciting town in Oxfordshire, but as a practical base for wider exploration, Kidlington does the job rather well.
