Watermead Country Park stretches for miles along the water, its network of lakes and nature reserves a proper breath of fresh air. Nature Lake offers some of the county's best birdwatching - herons stalk the shallows while kingfishers flash between the willows. The park's cycle paths connect all the way to the city centre, though it's the quiet northern sections that feel most rewarding.

Syston station puts you within striking distance of the Peak District in one direction, London in another. But there's plenty closer to home. The surrounding villages like Cossington and Sileby have that proper English countryside feel - ancient churches, war memorials, and pubs that still serve decent bitter.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for city excursions - Leicester's markets, curry houses, and the impressive King Richard III visitor centre are all easily reached. Yet you wake up to countryside views and can walk straight into Watermead's 500 acres without fighting for parking.

The area works particularly well for families. Kids can burn energy around the lakes while adults appreciate the peace. Midweek, the paths are yours alone. Weekends bring cyclists and dog walkers, but there's space for everyone along these former gravel workings turned nature reserve.
