Market day brings proper life to this handsome farming town, when the streets fill with tractors and locals catching up over coffee. Turriff sits in the heart of Aberdeenshire's agricultural belt, surrounded by rolling hills that offer cracking walks and views across the Buchan countryside.

Delgatie Castle dominates the landscape just south of town - a proper 13th-century stronghold where Mary Queen of Scots once stayed. The castle's still lived in, which gives it a very different feel from the usual tourist ruins. In town itself, The Turra Coo gallery tells the story of the famous bull that sparked riots here in 1913, a bit of local history that still gets folk talking.

Walking enthusiasts have plenty to choose from. Hill of Lendrum provides the best views, while Berry Hill and Steinman Hill offer gentler climbs through farmland and moorland. The Wood of Delgaty makes for a lovely afternoon wander, particularly when the bluebells are out.

Turriff's about 40 miles northwest of Aberdeen, easily reached via the A947. It's proper farming country - quiet midweek but lively on market days and weekends when the local pubs fill up. The George and Ann Thomson Memorial Fountain in the town square marks the centre of things, though honestly there's not a huge amount to keep you occupied for more than a day or two.

That's where the nearby holiday parks come in handy. Several sites within easy reach offer a peaceful base for exploring this corner of Aberdeenshire. You're well positioned for day trips to the Moray coast at Banff and Macduff, while Aberdeen's close enough for a proper city break when you fancy a change from rural life.
