This border town sits in prime position between Belfast and Dublin, but it's the surrounding countryside that really draws visitors - rolling hills, dramatic peaks, and that lovely stretch of coast just minutes away.

Newry itself is a proper working town rather than a tourist destination. The high street can feel quiet midweek, but venture beyond and you'll find yourself at the foot of some of Northern Ireland's most spectacular walking country. Round Seefin offers one of the better viewpoints without too much effort, while the more adventurous can tackle the higher peaks.

Down towards the coast, Sherby Beach provides a decent spot for a stroll, though it's hardly the region's most impressive stretch of sand. The real draw is the access to the Mournes - this mountain range has been pulling walkers and climbers for generations, and rightly so. Quarter Road Pic Area makes a handy lunch stop if you're exploring by car.

Getting here is straightforward enough on the A1 from Belfast or Dublin. The town sits roughly halfway between both cities, making it a sensible base for exploring both the mountains and the coast. Several holiday parks dot the surrounding area, from basic campsites like Bloody Bridge to more upmarket glamping options tucked into the foothills. Tollymore Forest Park, with its ancient woodland and mountain streams, lies just to the south and remains one of the region's top outdoor draws.
