Salt built this town. The legacy of Northwich's industrial heritage runs deeper than most places - literally. Mining subsidence has shaped the landscape for generations, creating an oddly undulating terrain that gives the town centre its distinctive character. These days, the old salt works have largely given way to retail parks and modern housing, but you can still sense the industrial past in the way the River Weaver cuts through everything.

The town itself won't win any beauty contests. It's proper working Cheshire - functional rather than fancy. But that's exactly why it works as a base for exploring this corner of the county. You're bang in the middle of some lovely countryside here. Petty Pool offers decent walking, while the various woods - Pettypool Wood, Owley Wood, Church Wood - provide proper escapes from the A556 traffic. Golf enthusiasts have options too: Sandiway Golf Club, Vale Royal Golf Club, and Hartford Golf Club all within easy reach.

Delamere Forest sits just to the southwest, and that's where things get interesting. The forest trails are well-maintained, and you can easily spend a full day there. Meanwhile, the string of meres and pools scattered around the area - New Pool, Rookery Pool - make for pleasant afternoon walks when you fancy something gentler.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The M6 runs close by, and you're only twenty minutes from Chester if you need proper shopping or dining. The train station connects you to Manchester and Birmingham without fuss.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You get the countryside access without the isolation - Northwich has supermarkets, pubs, and all the practicalities sorted. It's an honest base for exploring Cheshire's quieter side.
