Henley-in-Arden

A single high street lined with medieval timber-framed houses tells the story of this former market town. Henley-in-Arden sits snugly in the Forest of Arden - what's left of Shakespeare's ancient woodland - making it feel properly rural despite being just 16 miles from Birmingham.

The town has that sleepy quality you only find in places that peaked centuries ago. Half-timbered buildings lean companionably against each other along the main drag, their black beams and white walls creating the kind of postcard scene that makes Americans reach for their cameras. It's quiet here midweek, with just the odd dog walker and retired couple browsing the antique shops.

Woodland surrounds the town on three sides. West Grove Wood offers decent walking through mixed deciduous forest, while Rough Hills provides more challenging terrain for those wanting to stretch their legs properly. Lodge Hill, the area's highest point, rewards the climb with views across the Warwickshire countryside - on clear days you can see the Malvern Hills.

Stratford-upon-Avon lies just eight miles south, making Henley an excellent base for avoiding the tourist hordes while exploring Shakespeare country. The M40 runs close by, so London's two hours away if you need a city fix.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You get the peace of the countryside with easy access to both Stratford's attractions and Birmingham's urban offerings. It's that sweet spot where you can walk in ancient woodland before breakfast, then catch a matinee performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
