The city's famous steel-making legacy feels a world away once you venture into the hills around the S36 postcode - proper Peak District territory with reservoirs carved into valleys and walking routes that'll test your lungs.

Underbank Reservoir and Midhope Reservoir offer brilliant spots for a breather between the urban sprawl and open moor. Midhope's the larger of the two, sitting in a dramatic valley that feels surprisingly remote considering you're still technically in Sheffield's orbit. The surrounding landscape shifts from suburban streets to heather-clad hills within minutes.

Walkers have plenty to choose from. Ewden Height provides cracking views across the valley, while Wind Hill Wood and Hagg Wood offer gentler rambles through mixed woodland. Whitwell Moor stretches for miles - a proper bit of wilderness where you might spot grouse if you're lucky. The area around Broomhead Park gives you that classic Peak District feel without the tourist crowds you'll find further south.

Getting here's straightforward enough - Sheffield city centre is about 20 minutes by car, with decent bus links if you're not driving. The suburban villages dot the hillsides, connected by narrow lanes that wind between dry stone walls.

Staying at one of the local campsites or glamping spots makes perfect sense for exploring both Sheffield's attractions and the surrounding countryside. You get the best of both worlds - proper walking country on your doorstep and easy access to the city when you fancy a change of pace.
