Market day transforms this Welsh border town into something properly alive. Welshpool sits where the River Severn cuts through rolling Powys countryside, close enough to Montgomery to make castle-hunting easy but with enough character to stand alone. The streets have that lived-in feel you get in working towns - not polished for tourists, just getting on with things.

Montgomery Castle looms from its hilltop perch just down the road, one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in Wales. Worth the climb for views across the Severn Valley. The Old Bell Museum back in town tells local stories with the kind of passion you only find in volunteer-run places. Monty's Brewery does cracking ales if you fancy sampling something properly local.

Countryside here rolls in gentle waves towards the English border. Dolydd Hafren Nature Reserve follows the Severn's meanders through water meadows that flood spectacularly in winter. Whittery Wood offers proper walking without the crowds, while Clinton's Community Orchard shows how communities can create something lovely from nothing much.

Getting here means the A483 from Newtown or threading through lanes from Shrewsbury - about 20 miles either way. It's that sweet spot between Welsh hill country and English market towns, close enough to both without being overrun by either.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're positioned for day trips to Powis Castle, within striking distance of the Brecon Beacons, yet far enough from major roads to hear yourself think. The Cloverlands Model Car Collection might sound niche, but it's surprisingly engaging on a wet afternoon. This area rewards the curious - there's always another castle, church, or ancient site just over the next hill.
