About Woolacombe

Three miles of golden sand stretch along North Devon's coast here, backed by rolling dunes and watched over by Morte Point's dramatic headland. This is proper surfing territory - waves roll in consistently from the Atlantic, making Woolacombe Beach one of the country's most reliable surf spots. The town itself sits in a valley that opens directly onto this magnificent stretch of coastline.

Woolacombe Sands dominates everything here. It's won Blue Flag status repeatedly, though that hardly captures the wild beauty of this place when winter storms roll in. During summer it's packed with families, but venture to the quieter northern end near Barricane Beach and you'll find rockpools and relative peace. The southern stretch towards Combesgate Beach offers the best surf breaks.

Beyond the main beach, smaller coves reward the curious. Rockham Beach requires a bit of a trek but delivers solitude and excellent snorkelling. Grunta Beach, tucked beneath the cliffs, stays sheltered when Atlantic winds pick up. For something completely different, Barricane Beach is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest - its unique shell sand comes from the Caribbean, carried here by Gulf Stream currents.

The village has grown around tourism but retains character. Bay Hotel Golf Course offers coastal views that'll distract from your swing, while Mortehoe Museum tells the story of this stretch of coast. Potter's Hill provides cracking views across the entire bay - well worth the climb.

Barnstaple, 14 miles inland, is your nearest proper town with rail connections. The coastal bus service connects Woolacombe to Ilfracombe during summer months. Staying at one of the many holiday parks scattered around the valley gives you beach access within walking distance and the freedom to explore the dramatic coastline of North Devon at your own pace.
