The forest spreads across the Powys hills like a proper blanket of green, and once you're in among the trees, the outside world just melts away. It's the kind of place where the only sound is your boots on the path and maybe some birds doing their thing overhead. The walks vary from gentle riverside strolls to proper leg-burners up through the conifers, so it suits everyone from toddlers to serious hikers.

This is Mid Wales territory, so expect genuine quiet and the kind of air that actually tastes fresh. The nearest town is Llangammarch Wells, a small spa village that's worth a pint in at the end of the day. The forest itself works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Riverside and Irfon River are both within striking distance and make decent bases for a few days exploring.

Walkers will get the most from this one. History types less so, unless you're into the landscape itself. Kids can handle it if they're the outdoorsy sort, though there's not much in the way of facilities or novelty to keep them entertained if they're after a theme park vibe. Allow a couple of hours minimum for a decent walk, longer if you want to properly explore. The forest is free to access and open year-round, though autumn and spring are when it really sings. Winter's moody too, if you don't mind getting a bit damp.
