Aberdour Church Of Scotland - St. Drostan's Church

St. Drostan's Church sits quietly on the edge of Aberdour, a modest sandstone building that's been here since medieval times. The kirk itself is simple - proper old-school Scottish, with whitewashed walls and a small bell tower - but what catches you is the setting. You're looking out towards the Moray Firth, and on a clear day the light coming off the water is genuinely lovely.

Inside, it's exactly what you'd expect from a rural church of this age: stone walls, wooden pews worn smooth by centuries of backsides, a handful of brass plaques naming the local worthies. The churchyard is the real draw for most visitors - packed with gravestones going back generations, many with proper character and the kind of weathered inscriptions you actually have to work to read. If you're into local history or genealogy, you could easily spend an hour picking through the names.

This isn't a major tourist attraction, and that's rather the point. It's the sort of place you visit because you're camping nearby at AC/DC Glamping or Down On The Farm and you fancy a gentle walk to somewhere with actual roots. Free to visit, naturally, and there's usually an honesty box for the upkeep. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour unless you're a serious grave-hunter, then add another hour. Fraserburgh is only a few miles north if you need shops or a decent cafe beforehand. Best visited on a quiet weekday morning - weekends can see the odd tour group, which rather spoils the peaceful vibe.
