Fraserburgh

Scotland's fishing capital sits at the very tip of Aberdeenshire, where the North Sea pounds against harbour walls that have sheltered boats for centuries. Fraserburgh has never been about pretty postcards - this is a working town with grit under its fingernails and salt spray on its streets.

The harbour dominates everything here. Massive trawlers unload their catch while seabirds wheel overhead, and the fish market hums with early morning activity. It's proper authentic Scotland, far removed from the tourist trail. Walking the harbour walls gives you front-row seats to this daily theatre, plus cracking views across the Moray Firth.

Beyond the town, Aberdeenshire's rugged coast unfolds in both directions. New Aberdour Beach stretches for miles - a proper windswept expanse that's brilliant for clearing your head. The countryside inland rolls away in gentle hills, with ancient sites like the Crannog and St Drostan's dotting the landscape. Hill of Turclossie offers decent walking if you fancy a climb.

Getting here means a drive - Fraserburgh sits 40 miles north of Aberdeen, connected by the A90 and A952. It's not the quickest journey, but the coastal scenery makes it worthwhile. Staying at one of the nearby parks like Aden Caravan & Camping gives you a proper base for exploring this often-overlooked corner of Scotland. The town has enough character to keep you interested for a day or two, while the surrounding coast and countryside provide plenty of reasons to linger longer.
