Africa Alive

Africa Alive sits just outside Lowestoft and is exactly what it claims - a proper zoo focused on African wildlife. You're walking around enclosures with zebras, giraffes, big cats, and a solid collection of other animals from the continent, which makes for a solid half-day out if you're staying nearby.

The layout is straightforward enough. You follow a path through the site, stopping at each enclosure to watch the animals. On a good day the big cats are active, though like any zoo, timing matters - early morning visits tend to be better than mid-afternoon when everything's dozing in the heat. There's a decent playground for younger kids who need a break from walking, and the usual refreshment options scattered about.

Families with children aged five to twelve will get the most from it. The animal interactions are engaging without being too demanding, and it's less overwhelming than some of the massive wildlife parks. A morning visit takes two to three hours comfortably. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonably priced for what you get.

It works well as part of a wider Suffolk coast break. Kessingland Beach Holiday Park is just over a mile away, so you could easily base yourself there and combine Africa Alive with beach time and the nearby attractions around Lowestoft. The Hollies and Henstead Fields are also within striking distance if you're caravan-based. Not a destination unto itself, but a worthwhile addition to a family holiday in the area.
