Kessingland Country Park

The coastal marshes around Kessingland pull you in straightaway - wide open water, reed beds stretching to the horizon, and genuinely decent birdwatching if you know what to look for. The country park sits just south of Lowestoft, making it an easy reach from town but far enough out to feel properly remote.

This is walker and nature-spotter territory. The trails wind through wetland, and depending on the season you'll clock egrets, marsh harriers, and various waders picking about in the shallows. Spring and autumn migrations are when locals get properly excited - the numbers can be mad. There's something meditative about standing still in a hide, waiting for something interesting to show up.

It's not a place to rush. You need time to settle in, let the wildlife adjust to your presence. An hour minimum if you're just doing a quick circuit, but three or four hours won't feel wasted if you're genuinely interested in what lives here. Bring binoculars - essential. A field guide helps too, unless you're the type who just enjoys watching birds be birds without naming them.

Families with patient kids will manage fine. The hyper ones? They'll be bored within twenty minutes, no question. If you're camping nearby at Pigs in Blankets, it's a cracking half-day visit before heading back for tea. The park itself is free - that's the Suffolk way with nature reserves. Timing-wise, go early morning or late afternoon when wildlife's most active. Mid-summer noon is pointless.
