Aireville Park

The River Aire cuts through Aireville Park like someone's drawn a line through a map - this is proper walking country just outside Skipton. You're looking at a nature reserve that follows the water valley, with woodland trails that shift from easy riverside ambles to proper hill climbs depending on your mood and fitness.

What you actually get is a mix of riverside paths, woodland sections, and open moorland views. The water is the star - it's wide enough here to feel genuinely scenic, and you'll spot everything from grey herons to the odd kingfisher if you're quiet about it. The trails are well-marked, nothing fancy, just honest paths that take you through different habitats. Walkers will find a good two to three hours' worth of decent ground here, and it's the kind of place where you can knock together a route that suits your legs - short loop by the water or a longer circuit up onto the higher ground.

It's free to access, which is always a relief. Families with kids aged seven upwards will manage the easier sections without complaint. Younger ones might struggle with some of the steeper bits.

If you're camped at Draughton Heights or any of the local sites within a few miles - Bolton Abbey Estate, Thornton Hall - this sits nicely as a morning or afternoon activity. Not a day in itself, but a solid addition to a Yorkshire Dales break. Spring and autumn are best; winter can get muddy without warning.
