West Harts Hill

The walk up West Harts Hill rewards you with proper Dales views without the crowds you'd fight at some of the bigger peaks nearby. It's a straightforward climb from Skipton direction, taking roughly an hour to the summit depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The hill itself isn't dramatic - moorland rather than dramatic crags - but that's rather the point. You get wide-open views across the Yorkshire Dales, and on a clear day you can see for miles without feeling like you're fighting other walkers for elbow room.

This is walker territory, really. Families with older kids will manage fine, though it's not a gentle stroll and younger children might flag. The terrain is typical Dales moorland - a bit boggy in places after rain, so proper boots matter. Allow two to three hours if you're taking it steady and want time to sit at the top with a flask.

The nearest base for a park holiday would be one of the campsites dotting the valleys below - Coxons Farm Glamping Pods is closest at 2.7 miles, or if you want something more traditional, Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits at 4.2 miles and gives you access to proper Dales infrastructure. Use West Harts Hill as part of a broader walking loop rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with other local peaks or valleys for a fuller day out. Best visited in spring or early autumn when the moorland isn't waterlogged and the light is sharp.
