All Saints' Church : Brixworth

The tower of All Saints' Church rises above the village of Brixworth like something from an Anglo-Saxon fever dream. This is one of England's oldest churches, built around the 7th century with stone pillars that have stood for nearly 1,400 years. Walking inside feels properly ancient - the narrow nave, the round arches, the sense that you're standing in a building that predates the Norman Conquest by centuries.

What strikes you most is the simplicity. There are no elaborate carvings or Victorian fussiness here. Just solid stone, original Saxon windows you can actually trace with your fingers, and an archaeology lesson that unfolds as you move through each section. The tower itself is extraordinary - a rarity for this period, genuinely worth studying if you've got any interest in how people built things before they had proper technology.

History enthusiasts will spend a proper hour here. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet after twenty minutes unless they're into that sort of thing. The village itself is small, so you're really coming for the church itself rather than a day out.
