All Saints' Church, Exmouth

The parish church sits on Exmouth's seafront, a solid Victorian structure that catches you off guard if you're expecting something medieval. Built in the 1820s, All Saints' is all red sandstone and proper proportions - the kind of church that tells you this was once a thriving Georgian resort town, not just a bucket-and-spade destination.

Inside, it's surprisingly light and airy. The decorative plasterwork has real character, and if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical design, the chancel's worth a proper look. The stained glass is decent without being showstopping. Most people pop in for ten minutes between the promenade and a coffee - which is fair enough.

It works best for architecture enthusiasts or anyone interested in how Victorian seaside towns developed. Families won't linger, but children old enough to appreciate a bit of history and craftsmanship get something from it. If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Haven Devon Cliffs or Dawlish Sands are practically on the doorstep - it's an easy morning detour before heading to the beach proper.

Getting inside can be hit-and-miss depending on the time and day, so don't rely on it being open if you've got limited time. The churchyard itself, though, overlooks the coast and offers decent views. Worth twenty minutes if you're in the area, but not worth rearranging your day for. Exmouth's real pull is the seafront and the Jurassic Coast nearby, not its religious architecture.
