All Saints' Church, Staplehurst

The Church of All Saints dominates Staplehurst's High Street like a solid, honest friend who's been there for centuries. This is proper medieval architecture - we're talking 14th century onwards, with the kind of weathered stone and pointed windows that make you understand why people built things to last. Inside, there's an impressive timber roof and some genuinely fine stained glass that catches the afternoon light beautifully. The real draw for most visitors is the memorial to the 1865 railway crash victims - Dickens himself was on that train, and the church commemorates what was essentially Victorian England's worst transport disaster at that point.

It's free to wander in during the day, and you'll want twenty minutes to half an hour to look properly around. Church historians and anyone interested in Victorian social history will find real value here. Families with older children might appreciate the tangible connection to a famous literary event, though younger kids will likely get restless.

Staplehurst sits about four miles south of Tonbridge, and if you're basing yourself at one of the local holiday parks - Tanner Farm or Still Acres are both within a few miles - the church works well as a village anchor point. Pop in while you're exploring the High Street. It's not a destination you'd drive an hour for specially, but if you're camping locally and keen on a bit of history, it's well worth the stop. Decent pubs nearby too for afterwards.
