All Saints Church, Ulting

The church sits quietly in Ulting village, just outside Maldon, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander if you're in the area. All Saints is a medieval parish church with enough character to justify stopping for twenty minutes or so - the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rare these days.

Inside, there's genuine medieval work: timber framing in the walls, a decent chancel, and the kind of worn stonework that tells you generations have passed through here. It's not grand or showy, but that's rather the point. If you're into parish churches - and there's a particular breed of visitor who absolutely is - this one's worth the detour. Kids will get restless quickly unless they're the type who enjoy hunting for carved gargoyles and reading old tombstones.

Location-wise, you're in easy striking distance of Maldon itself, which has proper maritime heritage and charm. From here, the nearby holiday parks make sense as a base: Hoe Mill Lock is barely half a mile away and highly rated, while Mill Beach and Osea Leisure are both within five miles. If you're doing a longer park holiday in Essex, you could easily fold this church visit into a morning exploring Maldon before heading back to your accommodation.

Go when the sun's on the south side - the light through the windows is worth it. No admission charge as far as I'm aware, and no faffing about with opening times unless it's locked up.
