Allt-fawr

The walk up Allt-fawr rewards you with proper views across the slate mining valleys that define this corner of Gwynedd. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards - nothing that'll take your breath away athletically - but the landscape around Blaenau Ffestiniog is dramatic enough to make the climb worthwhile. You get clear sightlines down to the town itself and across the surrounding hills, which honestly looks far better from above than it does wandering the streets below.

This is walkers' territory, mainly. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog depending on fitness, and there's not much at the top itself - just space and views. Allow an hour or so from Blaenau Ffestiniog depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire things. Spring and early summer are best; you'll want decent weather because the cloud sits low here surprisingly often.

If you're camping in the area - and there's plenty of choice within a few miles, from the glamping at Plas Weunydd to the more basic pitches at Llyn Gwynant Campsite or Bryn Dinas - this makes a solid morning walk before heading into town for a late lunch. The combination of outdoor camping and a genuine hill walk captures what draws people to North Wales in the first place, far better than ticking off big-name peaks like Snowdon.
