Craigysgafn

The walk up Craigysgafn rewards you with something you won't find on the honeypot peaks - proper solitude. Near Blaenau Ffestiniog, this isn't a mountain that will take your breath away with drama, but it's exactly the sort of fell that locals love because tourists don't bother with it.

You're looking at around 600 metres of elevation, which means a couple of hours for most people depending on your route and fitness. The approach from the Ffestiniog area is straightforward enough, though the paths can be boggy after rain - standard North Wales fare. Once you're up, the views across the slate valleys and towards Snowdonia proper are genuinely good. The kind of vista that makes you understand why people choose to live up here.

This is squarely walker territory. Families might manage it if the kids are keen and reasonably shod, but it's not a gentle stroll. History enthusiasts won't find much here - no ruins or anything - so it's purely for those after fresh air and a bit of leg work.

Stay at Llyn Gwynant Campsite (5 miles away) or one of the pods at Bryn Dinas if you want somewhere decent to base yourself. You could combine Craigysgafn with walks in the Snowdonia area - plenty of options within striking distance. Free to climb, obviously, and best tackled on a clear day when the mist isn't sitting on everything. Go midweek if you can. The car park doesn't get rammed, but why risk it?
